Insights from our IT apprentice Tobias: On reasons for his career choice, benefits at BMW, and his personal application tips.
Tobias is doing an apprenticeship to become a Digitalisation Management Specialist. In this interview, the 18-year-old shares his experiences, discusses the benefits at BMW Group, and the prospects after his apprenticeship. He also provides valuable tips for applications.
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO DO AN IT APPRENTICESHIP?
"I chose this field because it encompasses future topics such as digitalisation, innovative technologies, and sustainability. I'm not just interested in this personally – having a basic knowledge in IT is fundamentally helpful in my view. Even if one works in a different profession later on, an understanding of technical contexts and programming is advantageous. Ultimately, I chose BMW not only for the nice products but also because of the excellent conditions and benefits."
WHAT OTHER BENEFITS CONVINCED YOU?
“In addition to the apprentice rental scheme, there is really a lot! For example, BMW covers the ‘Deutschlandticket’ 100% and there are many discounts in online shops, which can save us a lot of money. For apprentices who have moved to Munich for the apprenticeship, there is even a dedicated apartment building. We are offered a lot."
WHAT IS THE RELATIONSHIP LIKE WITH YOUR INSTRUCTORS AND COLLEAGUES?
"I have a close relationship with my supervisor that is relaxed but still very respectful. I have the impression that BMW places great value on the development of us apprentices and therefore offers not only excellent support from our instructors and mentors in the departments but also training opportunities. Learning groups are also supported, for example, and more experienced apprentices guide the newer ones."
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER THE APPRENTICESHIP? DO YOU LOOK POSITIVELY TOWARDS YOUR FUTURE?
"I am sure that many career paths will be open to us apprentices within the company after our apprenticeship – perhaps even internationally. BMW is a fantastic employer in this regard, as it is a huge company with many areas in which we can work. An absolute highlight is, of course, the guarantee of employment for all apprentices, which gives us a lot of security. Taking time off to study while working would also be an option after vocational training. Let’s see where my journey takes me after graduation."
WHAT WOULD YOU RECOMMEND TO OTHERS INTERESTED IN AN APPRENTICESHIP AT BMW?
"Be brave and don’t be put off by the size of the company. I personally put a lot of effort into my CV and application documents before applying. I would also recommend taking a close look at the application tips on the career page, as they are very helpful. Before the selection day, I simulated an interview situation with my family so that I had some practice and felt more confident. This definitely provided me with some reassurance."
