Lots of HP.
And even more team spirit.

Formula Student is an international design competition in which students from all over the world pursue the goal of designing and producing a single-seater formula racing car as a team and then competing in various international events. The BMW Group is not only a founding member of the German event Formula Student Germany, but has also been one of the main sponsors of the competition since its foundation in 2006.

In the course of the development process, the students constantly have to face new challenges while going through similar or even the same processes of the automotive industry. This gives the participants a unique opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge in a practical context.

In order to emerge as the winning team, it is not only crucial how the self-designed vehicle performs on the race track, but also whether the students can convince the jury of the overall package consisting of design, performance, sales presentation, costs and business plan.

Insights from the team

BMW Group voices.

Ilka Horstmeier in conversation with students involved in Formula Student
Motorsport is simply part of BMW – it's in our DNA. And that's exactly why we are involved in Formula Student. We are fascinated by the passion and creativity that the young teams bring with them. They demonstrate team spirit, innovative strength and the courage to break new grounds. These are qualities we need in order to shape the mobility of tomorrow together.
Ilka Horstmeier

Employee at the BMW Group talking to a student.
During my Electrical Engineering studies at the University of Applied Sciences Munich I was part of the municHMotorsport team. As Technical Manager, I was responsible for the development of the municHMotorsport autonomous Formula Student racing car. Looking back, it was an exhausting but above all enjoyable time that paved the way for my career at BMW.
Bottom line: Formula Student = one of the best decisions of my life!

Formula Student is the breeding ground for passionate engineers with a deep technical understanding. The experience of getting your own product on the road gives you a head start over the average graduate. As a judge it is great to see how the teams come up with innovative designs and push the envelope to a new level. Talking to students at the FSG underlines the passion and deep technical knowledge the students have.

Diverse experiences, accumulated knowledge and lived ups-and-downs that you bring from Formula Student are the most valuable prerequisite to master an entry into today's fast-paced and complex working world. The key to success within Formula Student is that all these aspects are managed by the students in interdisciplinary teams and in constant discourse.

AMZ Racing Formula Student Car

World Record!

In 2023, our team AMZ Racing reclaims the Guinness World Record for the "Fastest 0-100 km/h acceleration of an electric car"! The breathtaking success beats the previous record by around 0.5 seconds and is also the first time that an electric vehicle has broken the one-second barrier. In 12.3 metres and 0.956 seconds, the vehicle named "mythen" accelerated to 100 km/h.

Arnold Schwarzenegger meets TU Wien Racing.

In September 2024, Arnold Schwarzenegger visited the BMW Group Plant Steyr. Reason of his visit was the energy conversion of the plant to district heating. During the event, in addition to visiting engine assembly and electric engine production, he also met our TU Wien Racing team at the training and education center and had a chat with the team members.
Our Engagement

The teams we sponsor.

The BMW Group not only supports Formula Student Germany, but is also involved in a long-term commitment as the main sponsor for four student teams. In addition to financial support, the teams are also supported through mentoring, know-how and access to manufacturing technologies.

The close cooperation gives us direct access to highly qualified and motivated talents from areas such as electrification, lightweight construction, software development or sensor technology. Another positive effect: technologies and innovations developed by the teams can be adopted by the BMW Group.

AMZ Racing.

Since the Academic Motorsport Club Zurich (AMZ) was founded in 2006 by students of ETH Zurich, it has produced a prototype every year to participate in various Formula Student competitions in Europe. After three cars with combustion engines, AMZ has been building electric racing cars since 2010. AMZ is the first Swiss team in Formula Student and one of the most successful over the past few years.

The team also strives for top performance outside the Formula Student competitions. This can be seen impressively in several Guinness World Records for the fastest acceleration of an electric car. After 2014 and 2016, they hold the record again since 2023.

ELBFLORACE.

ELBFLORACE e.V., Dresden's only Formula Student team, was founded in 2006 out of pure enthusiasm for racing. Starting with a small group of 20 founding members and four subsequent combustion engines, the team has been oriented towards the advanced technologies of e-mobility since 2011. With the integration of the autonomous system, the team has also been present in the "Driverless Vehicle" category since 2017.

All of this is only possible through the collaboration of different departments within the Dresden team, which are connected to form a greater whole. Driven by an engine fueled by passion for something great.

municHMotorsport.

Since 2005, Team municHMotorsport has been working on the design, construction and manufacture of racing cars. Every year they conceive and develop new prototypes, using innovative technologies to bring their visions to life. The municHMotorsport team invests a significant amount of their spare time in this project and are highly motivated: Some of them enjoy the craft, others the design of sophisticated components.

#passionworks is what unites them – passion to achieve their common goal.

TU Wien Racing.

TU Wien Racing was founded in 2007 and can look back on a long history full of innovations. The team now consists of over 100 passionate members from various fields of study and diverse nationalities. It is the first Austrian team to build an autonomous vehicle.

The team is a family that not only shares the fascination for motorsport but also their experiences, knowledge, and skills. It is a team that grows together, facing challenges and providing students with the opportunity to apply their accumulated knowledge from their studies.

Formula Student Team AMZ Racing celebrating their win of FSG 2025

Formula Student Germany | August 2025.

This year´s Formula Student Germany was a special one, as the competition celebrated 20th anniversary. We are proud to be partners of Formula Student Germany since its founding!

From 18 to 24 August, we were present with our BMW stand at the Hockenheimring, where our team was available for talks with students and provided information about career opportunities. In addition, a group of our mentors once again supported the event as judges. Our BMW teams AMZ Racing, ELBFLORACE, municHMotorsport and TU Wien Racing gave their best and were able to improve their vehicle performance compared to last year. We were happy to see some of our teams "historic" cars on the grid at the first Formula Student Germany Historic Cup. At the end, our teams could achieve several first places including the overall victory by AMZ Racing.

Maisach Test Event | June 2025.

On 27 June, we invited our four Formula Student teams to test their cars at our BMW M Driving Academy in Maisach. For the teams, the event is an important step and an unique opportunity to test their self-developed cars under real conditions, with which they will participate in several competitions including the Formula Student Germany at Hockenheimring in August.

Our mentors as well as visitors from the BMW Group were also on site to exchange ideas with team members and find out about the current status of the vehicles. BMW works driver Erik Johansson took the opportunity to test the vehicles and was able to provide valuable feedback. The day was rounded off for the students with drift training and driving on the circuit under the guidance of Erik Johansson.
