Dominique and Arne work in Generative AI, developing camera‑based functions for our vehicles – and they show what successful collaboration between students and mentors can look like: thinking things through together, sharing open feedback, learning from one another, and turning ideas step by step into something tangible. A short glimpse into their teamwork that reveals how curiosity and a strong sense of partnership can spark real innovation.
Learning together, developing together: Arne and Dominique
on their daily work and collaboration in Generative AI.
Arne, how did you find your way into your working student role
at the BMW Group?
“Between my bachelor’s and master’s studies, I did an internship – and afterwards I was able to transition straight into a working student role. The handover was completely seamless. Right from the start, I was given a lot of responsibility, helped prepare features and supported demos. That meant I could continue working on the same topics alongside my master’s programme and quickly dive much deeper into them.”
How does your job complement your studies
and do you actually still find time for a life outside of work?
“The combination of theory and practice is incredibly valuable for me. A lot of what I learn at university can be applied directly to our projects – and in return, I take many insights from my day‑to‑day work back into my studies. Thanks to the flexible scheduling, there’s also plenty of time for studying and for life outside of work, even during exam periods.”
Dominique, in which situations do you benefit from Arne’s support?
“Arne is always reliable and keeps a clear overview of the current implementation status. He knows exactly which backend is running which function and which branch is stable for our demos (and which function is currently causing a bit of drama). He never hesitates to spontaneously take over a demo himself when needed – and handles it with great confidence. Arne also always has an open ear for the whole team and is incredibly supportive – his contribution is felt in every corner of our work.”
In which areas do you learn from Arne?
“There are many things I can learn from him – and hopefully I already do. What impresses me most about Arne is his positive energy; even in challenging moments, he remains a genuine ray of sunshine. He is also extremely skilled from a technical perspective and has excellent coding abilities – there’s definitely a lot one can pick up from him. It brings me great joy, and genuinely makes me proud, to have him in the team.”
If you could push any project forward,
with no limits on time or budget, which one would it be?
Arne: “I would work on a BMW Personal Assistant that integrates seamlessly into everyday life, takes over tasks intuitively, and makes the vehicle feel almost like a personal companion.”
Dominique: “I would build on exactly that kind of truly intelligent and safe assistant – without latency or technical limitations. A system that goes far beyond what we expect from a car today, and works so intuitively that after the very first drive you wouldn’t want to be without it again.”
What excites you most about your field of work?
Dominique: “What excites me most is developing something that doesn’t exist anywhere else yet – and bringing my own ideas to life so quickly that they become tangible straight away.”
Arne: “For me, the real excitement comes from working with the latest technologies and helping shape systems that will define the future of mobility.”
