A familial atmosphere and support for personal development at BMW Bank – Denise and Julia share their insights on leadership style and culture.
Denise and Julia share insights into their career paths at BMW Bank. Denise started in 2014 in claims management at Alphabet, a subsidiary of the BMW Group, then moved to dealer support and is now working in risk management. Julia, after completing her training as an insurance saleswoman, also went through various positions first at Alphabet and then at a service provider before joining BMW Bank, where she works as an assistant to management in the area of risk control. In the interview, both discuss the flat hierarchies, the familial atmosphere, and the diverse development opportunities.

DENISE, YOU HAVEN'T BEEN IN YOUR ROLE FOR LONG. WAS THERE ANYTHING THAT SURPRISED YOU AFTER RETURNING FROM PARENTAL LEAVE?
"What surprised me the most is that I have two managers here. In my case, they are two female leaders who jointly lead a department in a joint leadership model. I think that's really great! Overall, we have a very relaxed and trusting atmosphere. I particularly appreciate the flat hierarchies and the informal interaction even with management. When I returned from my parental leave, I was warmly welcomed personally by the managers and embraced by the team. Julia, whom I had known since my training, was also essentially waiting for me at BMW Bank."
JULIA, AS AN ASSISTANT TO MANAGEMENT, YOU ARE CLOSE TO THE LEADERSHIP. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE LEADERSHIP STYLE?
"Many companies may advertise flat hierarchies, but for me, this is truly what defines the style here. I have never felt apprehensive towards management, and there is a very personal and appreciative atmosphere. Employees are important to the leaders, and one feels like part of a large BMW family. The leadership style is very responsible and direct."
AND THE CULTURE IN GENERAL?
"I think 'versatile' describes it quite well! Here, people from various cultures, age groups, and with very different personalities work together. This makes everyday work so exciting. Overall, there is a very familial and friendly atmosphere."

YOU BOTH HAVE FAMILIES. HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO BALANCE WORK AND PRIVATE LIFE?
"Time management is key. And BMW really supports us excellently in this – whether through remote work, flexible hours, or the great scope for creativity that we have. Our managers are also very understanding when we need to change plans spontaneously because something comes up with the children. Overall, this is an environment where we feel comfortable and can take on new challenges – without having to choose between work and family."
