In conversation with Yian about joining the BMW Group
growing through the AcceleratiON programme and shaping his future with us.

Yian is part of the AcceleratiON trainee programme, where he explores the world of e‑mobility at BMW with a focus on battery technology. His journey with the BMW Group began during an internship in 2021, which later inspired him to join the programme after completing his master’s degree. In this interview, he shares insights into how he started at the BMW Group, what he has experienced within the AcceleratiON programme and how he imagines his future at the company.

How long have you been with the BMW Group and would you choose it again if you had the chance?

“I am still quite new to the BMW Group and have been here for about six months. Before joining the company, I did an internship at BMW, and that was the first time I heard about the AcceleratiON programme. It immediately caught my attention, because it felt like a good starting point for my career after finishing my master’s degree. That is why I decided to apply. And if I would choose BMW again? I think it would be quite miserable to say no after only six months. But honestly, I am really happy with my job and with BMW as an employer, so my answer is definitely yes.”

Which benefits of the AcceleratiON programme did you underestimate
the most at the beginning – and why did they surprise you?

"The first thing I underestimated was how valuable the exchanges between trainees are, not only within my own year but also across different cohorts. You learn so much from people who are at different stages of the programme. Secondly, I didn’t expect it to be this much fun to spend time together, even outside of work. The social side of the programme really surprised me in a positive way. And the third point isn’t something that surprised me, because I already knew about it beforehand, but it’s something I’m really looking forward to: the opportunity to go abroad for a three‑month placement together with fellow trainees.”

What made you feel that this is the right place to build your future?

Over time, I realised that BMW is simply the right place for me. Part of that is the location in Munich, which I really appreciate, but it is also the kind of technology we are working on. We are at the peak of automotive engineering, and because I am especially interested in battery technology, being here during the development of the new Gen6 batteries and the Neue Klasse feels like the perfect mix of professionalism and personal joy. That is why I see my future here.”

I am still at the very beginning of my career, so one of my main goals is to build a long-term future here at BMW. I want to stay, grow and develop within the company, both personally and professionally, and find the path that fits me best. I think the AcceleratiON programme provides the perfect foundation for this.

Which colleague would you like to
swap places with for a day and why?

“It is actually difficult for me to choose a specific colleague or division, because within the trainee programme we already have the chance to dive into so many different fields. We rotate through areas and see jobs that most employees would never get to experience so early in their careers, which is definitely a big privilege. We also spend a week on the production line assembling vehicles and another week in dealerships, so we already get a very broad view of the company.”

Imagine you could develop a car yourself –
what would be an essential feature in the car of the future?

“If I could develop my own car for the future, it would definitely be electric. I am a big fan of e‑mobility, and as an e‑mobility trainee that probably doesn’t come as a surprise. Electric cars are incredibly exciting from a technology and sustainability perspective, and with the new generation of batteries we are making great progress in areas like range and charging speed. These developments make e‑mobility more and more practical for everyday life, which is something I find really inspiring. For me personally, this is the direction I would choose for the future.”

How did you build your personal BMW network?
And which connections would you not want to miss today?

“My network at BMW is still growing, but even in a short time I have already been able to build some really meaningful connections. The trainee programme offers many opportunities and events where you meet people from different areas, which has helped me a lot. I have also learned a great deal from my mentor and from leaders I have spoken with, who have shared helpful advice and guidance. But the connections I would not want to miss today are definitely the ones with my fellow trainees. We go through the same experiences, support each other and stay in touch with people working in areas we might join later on. Those relationships already matter a lot to me.”

What has been your personal highlight of the trainee programme so far?
And what are you still looking forward to?

“My personal highlight so far has been the trainee days, which take place every month. All the trainees from Munich – and many international trainees as well – come together, and we have different discussion sessions and presentations from people across the BMW Group. Those days have always been very interesting and engaging, and I really enjoy learning from so many different perspectives.

One thing I am really looking forward to is my international assignment. In my case, my assignment is in the United States, and I think we will have an amazing time there. I want to learn more about the work we do in the production plant and experience the culture. And I am excited to enjoy all of this together with my colleagues – and in this case, even friends.”

What do you love about your Job
– and what do you hate?

"What I love most about my job is the work‑life balance, to be honest. The people I work with are very competent, friendly and supportive, which makes a big difference in everyday life. And I appreciate that I can learn so much in such a short period of time – that is something I really value.

As for what I ‘hate’, I think that is a very strong word. BMW is a large company, and with a company of this size there are naturally many processes in place. Sometimes, when you need something to happen very quickly, it can feel a bit challenging. But I see why these processes exist, and overall they help things run smoothly. It is just something you learn to navigate.”
