Louisa, a craft apprentice standing in a factory hall.
After school, I studied fashion and costume making, but cars were always a strong interest for me as they run in my family. When I discovered a soft furnishings and upholstery apprenticeship at BMW Group, it felt like the perfect way to combine both passions. I spend two days a week at college, mainly working with Rolls-Royce students, which allows us to exchange ideas and gain a different perspective on the same skills I apply in the workplace. Working alongside ex-apprentices is especially inspiring, as they support your development and motivate you to progress.

Ronnie working on a Rolls Royce
At college, there was a strong focus on UCAS and, as both my parents went to university, I initially followed that path. Although I accepted an offer, I wasn’t fully convinced, as I learn best through hands-on experience. I started at 18 feeling quite shy, but with support I’ve developed my confidence and presentation skills and now lead department meetings with senior managers – something unusual for an apprentice. Through placements in departments such as Quality, Planning and Interior Trim, I’ve built a strong network and discovered an interest in project management. By showing curiosity and a willingness to learn, I was given more responsibility, and my placement in Interior Trim has now led to a full-time job offer.
