FAQs.

All information about our apprenticeship professions can be found on our website www.bmw-werk-steyr.at/lehre.
Currently, 7 different apprenticeship professions are offered at the BMW Group plant in Steyr.

Every year in September, around 30 new apprentices start their apprenticeship.

At the beginning of August, the registration link for an apprenticeship is activated directly on our website.
The registration link remains online until all apprenticeship positions are filled.

To do an apprenticeship at the BMW Group plant in Steyr, you must have successfully completed compulsory school, usually the 9th grade.

In principle, your certificate alone is not the deciding factor in our decision to hire an apprentice. Technical interest, ability to work in a team and, above all, your commitment are particularly important to us. However, it turns out that mathematical understanding is a basic requirement, especially in professions such as electrical engineering and mechatronics.

You can find the application link on our website. Applications are only accepted online. If we are convinced by your application you will be invited to the selection day.

On the selection day, you can expect practical tasks, an online test and an interview with our training team so that we can get to know you even better.

There is one application link for apprenticeships at BMW. Here you have the option of selecting up to 3 desired apprenticeships, so you only have to apply once.

We process all applications immediately after receiving them and try to respond as quickly as possible. Since the selection days usually take place collectively (meaning we invite several applicants), it may sometimes happen that you do not receive immediate feedback from us. Please understand this. We assure you that we will give feedback for every application!

Just be yourself, for example, choose an outfit that suits you but is also appropriate for an interview. Find out about our company beforehand and whether you can identify with us. The most important thing is: Have fun, we look forward to talking to you!

After we have received your application documents, our recruiting team checks whether all documents are complete (most recent certificates enclosed, all required data available, compulsory school leaving certificate fulfilled). Our department then checks your professional suitability. If your application convinces us, we will invite you to a selection day . These start in September and are divided according to apprenticeship professions. It is therefore possible that someone who applied later will be invited to the selection day before you. At the end of the application process, there are trial days.

If you have sent us an application and you have convinced us in the interview, then the last step is to come and see us for a trial day. This is the only way you can be sure whether the apprenticeship is right for you. During the trial day you can familiarise yourself with our apprenticeships. You also have the chance to meet our apprentices and trainers. You can also come and see us during your school time as part of our practical work experience days.

Switching from one apprenticeship to another in a technical field is generally possible. We are happy to examine each individual case and provide advice.

We offer an "apprenticeship with Matura" in our factory starting from the second year of the apprenticeship. We support you by holding the training courses directly at our plant, allowing you to go directly from your apprenticeship to the lessons. Additionally, half of the time you spend attending the courses will be credited to your time account. The courses are also completely free of charge for you.

You start your apprenticeship with us in the training center of the BMW Group plant in Steyr, where you spend the first 8 weeks in basic training. There, all apprentices learn the same basics of metalworking.

During your entire apprenticeship, you will spend around 30 % of the time with us in the training center, 50% directly in the specialist department and around 20% in the vocational school.

As part of our MOVE programme, there is also the opportunity for apprentices with excellent performances to undertake international assignments and work at one of our BMW locations for about 2 months, gaining valuable experience and getting to know other countries.

Depending on whether our apprentices are with us in the training center or in the specialist department, the working hours vary. In the training center, the working hours are Monday to Thursday from 6:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and on Friday from 6:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. When our apprentices are in the specialist department, the working hours are Monday to Friday between 6:00 a.m. and 2:50 p.m. with a flexible working time framework.

According to the collective labour agreement, the remuneration is:

  • 1st year of training: €1,000
  • 2nd year of training: € 1,182.65
  • 3rd year of training: € 1,546.13
  • 4th year of training: €2,028.95

During the summer holidays (June - September) we offer the opportunity to complete a compulsory student internship. The prerequisite is that you are 16 years old when the internship begins and your curriculum requires a compulsory internship (e.g. HTL, HAK, HLW and technical schools).

From the in-house fitness center, financial support for your driver's license, to the opportunity to complete international assignments as part of our exchange program - we offer you a variety of different benefits. You can find them all on our website.

We guarantee that our apprentices will be taken on if they successfully complete their apprenticeship. After your apprenticeship, all doors in the BMW team are open to you. From further specializations in the specialist field to management positions.

Yes, there are. Girls are just as well suited for our technical apprenticeships as boys.
In total, nearly 20 percent of our apprentices are female.
With a female trainer on the team, we have a role model who demonstrates to the girls that a technological career can also be the right choice for them.

As an apprentice, we offer you the opportunity to live in a modern dormitory that is only 2 bus stops away from our plant. The dormitory fosters a family-like atmosphere that strengthens team spirit among the apprentices. You will benefit from a supportive environment and can fully concentrate on your apprenticeship.
Our training centre is also just a few minutes' walk from the Steyr Münichholz train station.
