With around 4,500 employees, the BMW Group plant in Steyr is the BMW Group's largest engine plant worldwide and one of the drive competence centres in our global production network.
Currently, 3-, 4- and 6-cylinder diesel and petrol engines for BMW and MINI brand vehicles are coming off the production lines. In 2022, nearly over 1.1 million engines were produced at the Steyr plant which means that around half of all new BMW and MINI vehicles sold worldwide with a diesel or petrol engine still have a "heart" made in Austria.
Within mechanical production – the BMW Group-wide competence centre for engine components – 10.17 million components such as crankcases, crankshafts, cylinder heads and connecting rods were manufactured in 2022. This means that almost every engine in a BMW, MINI or Rolls-Royce has a part made in Steyr.
In June 2020, series production of the housings for all new electric drives for vehicles such as the BMW iX3, BMW iX and BMW i4 began. With the parallel expansion of production capacities for combustion engines and in the area of alternative drives, the plant is ideally positioned with its broad expertise to actively shape the future of drive systems.
