PhD Swelling Modeling from Pouch to Cylindrical Cells (f/m/x)

THE FUTURE IS WHAT WE CREATE WHEN WE TAKE OUR VISIONS TO THE LIMITS.

PHD AT THE BMW GROUP.

Bridging the gap between your doctoral studies and the kind of career challenge you’re looking for isn’t always easy. That’s why our ProMotion PhD programme gives you the opportunity to apply your passion and scientific expertise to very real challenges that could shape the future of mobility. If selected, you’ll have the chance to really develop your own future career path with us through your practice-related thesis, promote your chosen specialty from within – and position yourself to secure the career you’ve always wanted.

As a PhD candidate in our Battery Technology team at the BMW Group, you will contribute to cutting-edge research in electromobility. Your work focuses on understanding the mechanical–electrochemical interactions in lithium-ion batteries, particularly the transferability of behavior between different cell formats. This research plays a vital role in advancing next-generation battery systems with silicon-containing anodes, supporting our commitment to sustainable and high-performance electric vehicles.

What awaits you?

  • You will support the design and production of pouch and cylindrical cells for experimental validation.
  • Furthermore, you help conduct electrochemical testing under controlled mechanical pressure conditions.
  • In addition, you contribute to analyzing impedance, ageing, and performance behavior across different cell formats.
  • You will assist in developing and applying simulation models to establish pressure–performance relationships.
  • Additionally, you support the derivation of transferability criteria between pouch and cylindrical cell formats.
  • You will also help validate experimental findings through computational modeling approaches.
  • Besides, you contribute to independent task completion with regular feedback from your mentor.

What should you bring along?

  • Master's degree in electrochemistry, materials science, physics, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in battery technology and hands-on experimental expertise.
  • Solid understanding of electrochemical measurement techniques and battery testing procedures.
  • Experience in data analysis and simulation tools such as COMSOL or comparable software is a plus.
  • Business fluent in Englisch and German.

Are you passionate about battery research and eager to contribute to the future of electromobility? Apply now!
