Specialist: Plant Engineer (GMR2.1)

 

As the Plant Engineer (GMR 2.1), you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and reliable operation of machinery and engineering systems across BMW Group South Africa. This statutory appointment carries responsibility for engineering governance, machinery safety, and regulatory compliance in a complex manufacturing environment.

 

What awaits you?

  • Fulfil the statutory responsibilities of the GMR 2.1 appointee in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations.
  • Provide engineering governance and oversight for machinery, electrical installations, pressure equipment, and associated engineering systems.
  • Lead machinery safety, engineering risk management, statutory compliance, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Govern Management of Change (MOC) processes and approve machinery-related modifications and engineering projects.
  • Ensure execution of statutory inspections, testing, audits, and corrective actions to maintain compliance.
  • Provide technical leadership to engineering teams and GMR 2.7 appointees across the business.
  • Interface with regulatory authorities, approved inspection authorities, contractors, suppliers, and internal stakeholders.

 

What should you bring along?

  • BSc Engineering or BEng degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or equivalent NQF qualification.
  • Government Certificate of Competency (Factories) (GCC Factories) is mandatory.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as an appointed GMR 2.1 in a manufacturing environment after obtaining a GCC.
  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in engineering project management and plant operations.
  • Sound knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, General Machinery Regulations, and associated statutory requirements.
  • Experience in machinery safety, engineering risk management, and statutory compliance.
  • Professional registration with ECSA will be advantageous.
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently manage competing priorities.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to data integrity.
