We, the BMW Group, offer you an interesting and varied working student occupation in the area of aging of alternative cathode materials for LIBs. We are an interdisciplinary team of experts, working on the analysis of Li-ion batteries and their components, supporting their development for the automotive industry, and in this project, we will investigate alternative cost-efficient cathodes for commercial Li-ion batteries. The focus is to understand the degradation mechanisms of the selected materials upon varying test protocols in different cell setups and find the ideal working conditions to obtain long-life and safe batteries.

What awaits you?

  • Active supervision and promotion of your scientific development towards a doctoral degree.
  • Laboratory project focused on cell preparation, starting from electrodes to final cell assembly.
  • Setup and development of electrochemical tests.
  • In-depth characterization of electrodes and cell aging products through a wide range of analytical techniques.
  • Data collection, analysis, and final interpretation of the data. Publication of the obtained data via scientific manuscripts and presentations in national/international conferences.
  • Developing analytical methods for operando and postmortem lithium-ion battery aging investigation.
  • Excellent opportunity to transfer scientific knowledge into an industry setting.

What should you bring along?

  • Master’s degree in chemistry, chemical engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience in laboratory work as well as strong knowledge of electrochemistry, batteries (e.g. lithium ion, post lithium, ...) and battery materials.
  • Previous experience with analytical methods would be advantageous.
  • Strong analytical skills and process orientation.
