BMW Group Plant Hams Hall is a modern, state-of-the-art engine manufacturing facility, located just outside Birmingham, UK. Producing the latest generation of three- and four-cylinder petrol engines, and precision machining key engine components, the plant will soon be celebrating 25 years of production. Operating seven days a week, with more than one engine rolling off the line per minute, the plant plays a key role in BMW Group’s global production network, supplying engines for BMW and MINI, including some of the latest plug-in hybrid vehicles.
We believe in creating an environment where our placement student really can learn by doing during their time with us and where they are given their own areas of responsibilities from the start. That’s why our experts treat you as part of the team from day one, encourage you to bring your own ideas to the table – and give you the opportunity to really show what you can do. While you will be given the guidance and any support required throughout the duration of the internship, you will also be expected to manage your own projects.
BMW Hams Hall, Birmingham – Business IT Intern – 13-Month Placement (July 2026)
We are looking for 2 interns to join our Business IT Development team for 13 months commencing July 2025. The role is based in TA-42 Machining, our function has 3 high volume flexible production lines and a dedicated Maintenance Team, and the role is to manage and develop IT based solutions to support the business. Our team is based in the same open plan office as the IT department and interns act as an interface to IT and the specialised Digitalisation Team, and other areas of the business working in this field.
What awaits you?
- Develop bespoke complex solutions using tools such as but not limited to Microsoft PowerApps, SharePoint, Oracle’s “Oracle Apex”, and basic programming in JavaScript / TypeScript / Python for customers.
- Develop Business Analytics solutions for communicating the data to a wider audience withing the Company.
- Use digitalisation methods to streamline pre-existing solutions in the business.
- Identify analysis' that can be improved with up-to-date reporting and analytics techniques – prioritising existing data analysis to new data collection.
- Use web technologies to improve and add new features to our existing internal web applications.
- Produce quality data analytics reports that are mobile device focused
What should you bring along?
- Studying towards a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Digital Media and IT or another relevant field and on track to achieve a 2:1 or above.
- An understanding and interest in business processes and the IT systems used to manage data.
- Excellent communication skills.
- High intrinsic motivation, creativity, project management skills and entrepreneur thinking.
- Programming language skills in one or more of the following (e.g. Python, Java, C#, C++, R, HTML). A project in one of the languages above available for review.
- Experience with data visualisation tools, preferably PowerBI/QuickSight.
- Understanding of Oracle / SQL databases.
- Data analytics background is preferred but not required
