We, the BMW group, offer you an interesting master thesis in the area of machine learning for situation awareness.
In a system that fuses the results of various low- and high level sources of perception, the amount that each individual source shall best contribute to the fused result is often hard to derive, mostly because the uncertainties in the information provided by the different sources are not calibrated and can thus not be easily compared.
What awaits you?
In the first place, the amount each source of information contributes to a fused result is based on expert knowledge about the current driving situation and the uncertainty of the provided information.
With this project suitable to be conducted in the context of a master thesis, we want the machine to learn to infer the expected uncertainty/quality/reliability of the different sources of information according to the current driving situation as it shows itself in the raw camera image and 3D low-level sensor detections.
This will result in a more robust fusion system that can more easily be applied to new, yet unseen driving situations.
Please note that your thesis must be supervised by a university on your part.
What should you bring along?
University degree (B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, Computer Science, Robotics, Computer Vision or related field of study.
Knowledge in machine learning and algorithms from robotics
Practical experience in machine learning and software development, especially TensorFlow and/or Python programming skills.
Experience with developing in C++ for real-time autonomous systems is a plus.
