Why did you come to work today?
I love the fact that, although we are based at the southern tip of Africa, I work in a ‘Global Office’. My teams deliver software for international customers, so I get to interact with people from over 20 different countries, almost every day. I learn so much through these interactions and really enjoy experiencing the different cultures.
How did you come to work today?
I drove my BMW X3 to work, mostly driving on the N1 highway. The N1 stretches almost 2000 kilometres, starting in Cape Town and ends at the South African/Zimbabwean border. Thankfully I only drive around 40km of this route every day.
On which project / topic are you currently working? What was your most exciting project?
I manage the Business Intelligence and Analytics department in the SAP Shared Services Centre. Our teams are constantly working on new, cutting-edge, and exciting projects. One of these is the ILAS Aftersales product where we are building an in-memory Data Warehouse using the latest SAP technologies. We are responsible for an 11TB database stored in memory which will give BMW transparency and access to real time information on the aftersales situation around the world.
What makes working at BMW Group special for you?
I have loved the BMW brand since I was a young boy and remember having posters of BMW cars on my bedroom wall. The product offering is unique and I really enjoy the fresh and innovative way of thinking in the IT environment, which is 100% Agile and Back2Code (where BMW is actually doing the development themselves).
Tell us something your co-workers don’t know about you?
I am a musician in my free time and played bass guitar in a Blues band while I was in High School. I thoroughly enjoy the creativity that music inspires, which is why I also loved being a programmer before I became a manager. I see coding as an opportunity to express creativity.
